We’re Off to Showcase 2017

If you’re in the luxury design business in Ireland then Showcase is one of the most important dates in your calendar. The Design and Crafts Council of Ireland’s annual trade show – which celebrated its 40th birthday last year – brings together more than 450 of the country’s designers and creators and introduces them to commercial buyers from all over the world. Not only is it an opportunity for designers to share their unique products with a whole new audience who might have missed out otherwise, it’s also a great way to experience what Irish designers have to offer and to engage with the community and develop skills through a selection of workshops and seminars.

So, you’ll understand if we’re more than a little excited to have been invited by DCCOI to show at their new Text Isle area this coming weekend! The show runs from Sunday to Wednesday, and we’re looking forward to showing the very best of Elaine’s beautiful cashmere collection, from classic year-round favourites…

Cashmere garments inspired by the beauty of nature

Inspiration is often talked about in conversations about design and craft, especially among designers of cashmere garments and other beautiful items.

It is a constantly evolving idea and one that designers are always searching for. When I am asked where my ideas and inspiration come from, it is always a difficult question to answer, as I think it is something very personal to each person and designer. Recently, I have been speaking to people about inspiration, and it made me think it was an interesting topic to write about.

For me, one of my biggest areas of inspiration is nature and particularly the scenic beauty of Ireland, as our island is such a beautiful and special place.

Thoureau said ‘Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads’, and the inspiration for elaine madigan cashmere really stems from the beauty around us, especially for the colours in the collection.

Four fantastic days at Showcase 2016!

Four fantastic days at Showcase 2016 with elaine madigan cashmere

Hi everybody, and happy February!

We’re now back in the land of the living after four hectic days at Showcase 2016 in the RDS last week.

This was our third year to show at this very vibrant and prestigious event. The Craft council of Ireland invited us to show at ‘Creative Island’, which is exclusively for businesses who manufacture in Ireland. And of course that includes us, as every elaine madigan cashmere garment is imagined, designed and manufactured right here in Ireland.

We had a fantastic show, with lots of domestic and international visitors. It’s so lovely to get the chance to meet people and to give them a flavour of the team behind the business.

A lovely morning for a stroll with ‘Emma’

cashmere wrap

There’s an age-old custom that has it that whatever the weather is like on St. Swithin’s Day (July 15), it will be like for the following forty days too.

‘St. Swithin’s day, if thou dost rain,
For forty days it will remain.
St. Swithin’s day, if thou be fair,
For forty days ’twill rain nae mair.’

Well, today is St. Swithin’s Day, and thankfully the morning dawned brightly, with beautiful blue sky, barely a wisp of cloud, and not a drop of rain to be seen or felt.

It was a perfect morning for a summer stroll through some of our scenic Irish countryside, but as I stepped out, I detected just a hint of chill in the air, with a light breeze whispering over the morning dew. So, I reached for my Emma cashmere wrap and draped it across my shoulders for that little extra warmth needed until the sun rose higher in the sky.

The Gina Hooded Cape – The perfect holiday cover-up

elaine madigan Cashmere

Our Gina Hooded Cashmere Cape has enjoyed a glowing review by Anne Marie Gee, a leading fashion blogger we met at the Arthur Cox Fashion Show in London recently.

Anne Marie took her ‘Gina’ on holiday with her to Tenerife, and says she ‘lived in it’ there, due both to its stylish looks and its versatility as an accompaniment for any summer outfit.

We’re delighted that Anne Marie was so happy with it, and we look forward to meeting her again.

See what she had to say about the Gina Hooded Cape:

Not all cashmere is created equal

Not all cashmere is created equal

Bargains abound, but midpriced sweaters sacrifice softness

January 17, 2010|By Sabrina Azadi, TRIBUNE NEWSPAPER

Cashmere. Just the word conjures images of sophistication. Like caviar and pearls, the fiber has humble beginnings. Who would think that the hair on the underbelly of the Mongolian goat would be in such high demand? But it has been for centuries, and because there is relatively little of it and because processing costs are high, it has traditionally been an indulgence.

So why is it that nowadays even Costco is selling it? Walk into any mall and you’ll come across cashmere sweaters in such a variety of prices your head might spin: $1,000 or $59.99?

Karl Spilhaus, president of the Boston-based Cashmere and Camel Hair Manufacturers Institute, believes the difference in price is often an indication of quality. “It’s a question of significant lower quality,” he says.
